Benefits Of Societies
-Abirami K and Sarnitha
As you step into the dream you have been waiting for to come true, (SRCC was your dream, right? If it wasn’t, well, it will soon be; just wait and watch ) you will be greeted with all sorts of surprises, most of them pleasant! One of such hatke and zordaar dhamakas will be the whirlpool of the college societies. They represent the extra-curricular portion of your term at college and promise to enrich you with worldly wisdom and experiences!
College societies are essentially semi-formal organizations, oops, we’ll delete that word; they are basically clans, families, fraternities where you get to meet likeminded people who share the same interests as you. Not just that, here you will come into contact with people who have skills and talents and abilities to take their passion forward, and in the process you will discover your own strengths and capabilities, and needless to say, have some aish and masti to retain your sanity in the mayhem and pagalpan that college’s roller coaster will throw you in!
The best part about being at SRCC is that you are bound to fit into at least one, if not more societies, at any given point in time.
With societies creating to everything under the sun- from music and dance to art and craft, to literature and social sciences, to finance and investment, to drama and social work, and even to sports of all kinds, we list down for you the benefits you can reap by joining the college societies:
1. Contacts with seniors
They’re gonna be your mentors, partners-in-crime & will show you how to party hard in society freshers’. But don’t worry, they will show you your path & let you leave a new trail of your own. After all, no one guides you better than your seniors who have experienced it all first hand, before you. Plus, you will get an adda, some sort of thikana of your own, so to say! Belongingness matters!
2. Enhancing your CV
The kind of roles and responsibilities you sign up for in societies determines the kind of internships and placements that will suit your caliber. Companies look for people who have held positions of responsibility in student organizations, and have a certain degree of leadership experience.
3. Best way to keep yourself busy
If it weren’t for college societies, you wouldn’t be enjoying freshers’ parties, Crossroads, Convocation and other fests. Interactions and work in societies will keep you busy throughout the year. Societies will come to your rescue when somebody special walks away from your life, and you are clutching your becahra, toota hua dil! Best cure to breakups, trust us!
Having seen politicians running behind posts, have we ever thought, “How disgusting are they?” Meanwhile in our fresher year, there’s been huge enigma about our seniors and the swag feeling around the posts held. Have we ever been awed by how they bring people whom we call Biggies? How do they handle the crowd, or put it the other way, how do they handle us to handle the SR’ites!? We are sure that at least once, as a fresher, we would have dreamt about being a leader who could control and influence his/her juniors.
If you are good enough and manage to bag a post through your credentials, you can act like the king, and shout out to everybody who cares to listen, “Tujhe zyada pata hai? Just listen to me, I am the boss!” You will be licensed to do that 😛
5. Structuring the Future
Once you find the areas where your interests lie, you have the advantage of using this insight about yourself while choosing your profession in the future. By gaining experience and capability in your chosen fields, you can structure your future to suit yourself.
‘Network’- We never thought that this term would be of essence in our college life and beyond. Our understanding of the tem was limited to the kind of networks that run the communication technologies. But societies add more meaning and make the term more sensible.
Societies help you connect with a wide range of individuals, corporate and associations for meaningful partnerships and mutual benefits.
Contacts may not be indispensable, but they sure are helpful in various areas like securing internships, arranging sponsorships for conducting fests, promoting a start-up and so on.
We know the fear and awe “Jaanta nahi main kaun hoon?” evokes! Socities might just enable you to say that, too, by extending your pahunch to the famous and the fabulous 😛
So, as the orientation dates approach, mark your calendars and decide which societies you want to go in for! Assess your strengths and weaknesses and apply accordingly. And don’t worry, no matter where you end up, there will always be a lesson or two, just waiting to be learnt! And meanwhile, enjoy the ride
